Collegiate racing, not just classes, start next month! We are excited to participate in the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference’s inaugural mountain bike series.

Races:

September 18 & 19 – Spokane, WA

September 25 & 26 – Bozeman, MT (women race free!)

October 2 & 3 – Boise, ID

Events:

Downhill, cross-country, and short track on the Northwest’s best trails!

Sizzling Summer for Huskies

Summer has held myriad highlights for Husky cyclists. Whether it has been Kamila Gwiazda’s and Lisa Toner’s San Juan Islands tour or a contingent of Huskies riding the STP, riders have been enjoying the region on two wheels. Naturally, this has included plenty of race success. Pete Hall flew the purple-and-gold colors on his mountain bike at Wisconsin’s Suburu Cup, medaling in all three of his events (XC, short track, and super D); Genevieve Gebhart has been speeding around the velodrome; Ryan Larson stood on the podium after the crit at the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic; and Davis Shephard, after tearing up the Cascade Classic, smashed the Cougar Mountain course record.

These are, of course, only a few of the many successes this summer. Husky Cycling has been at nearly every local road race and Huskies set the bar at the track, albeit under the cover of other teams. Grant Boursaw (Gregg’s Trek), Rad Cunningham (Lenovo), and Jordan Louie (Broadmark) are forces to contend with on Friday nights.

With the days getting shorter, Husky Cycling is getting ready for the Northwest’s world-famous cyclocross season. We are already looking forward to defending our collegiate men’s individual national title and improving on the team’s fourth place overall.

Movie Night on Saturday, Jan. 30th

We’re having a movie night! It features a 40 minute cycling documentary by
our own Evan Schmitt, then the feel-good cycling classic “Breaking Away.” A
great chance to see everyone, hang out, and get (even more) stoked for race
season.

Where: HUB 106B
When: Saturday, January 30, from 7-10 PM
Admission: FREE
Food: also FREE (there will definitely be cheese, crackers, cookies, fruit,
etc… and hopefully some Ezell’s Fried Chicken if I can alter the food
permit.)

There is room for about 120 people in HUB 106B, so feel free to bring a
friend, significant other, roommate. Hope to see you all there!

Women’s Team updates

Lisa, the women’s team coordinator, is organizing a dinner for new and returning members of the Husky Cycling women’s team on Tuesday, October 6th. We are meeting at 6:15pm at Bengal Tiger at the intersection of 65th and Roosevelt.

There will also be regular women’s team rides, led by Lisa, on Tuesdays at 10:45am and Thursdays at 9am. Meet at the HUB.

Team Meeting

We will have an introductory meeting for all new and returning members Thursday, October 8th in HUB room 209A at 6pm. New members will be able to hear about the club’s goals, activities, and benefits, as well as ask questions. This is also a great chance to become a member for 2009-2010 and order kit, fenders, and equipment from Specialized. We will also have new and slightly-used cycling kit for sale. Finally, this is also and great chance to meet other bike enthusiasts in the UW community.

Team Rides

Our team rides will start this Saturday (9/26) at 10am, leaving from the north end of the HUB. Our rides are open to riders of all experience and interest levels and this Saturday’s ride is a great way for new people to check out the club. We will also have a team ride on Sunday (9/27)–and every following Saturday and Sunday–at the same time and place. Everyone is welcome.

We will have an introductory team meeting on Thursday, October 8th, at 6pm in room 209A in the HUB. Details to come…

New and returning members:

The start of fall quarter means the beginning of another season for Husky Cycling. We are the official cycling club for the University of Washington and are open to all students, faculty, and staff. Our club is designed for a wide range of cyclists: we are made up of recreational riders, commuters, riders interested in trying racing, and experienced competitive cyclists. For this diverse community of cyclists, the club offers–among many other things–sponsor-pricing on bike parts and kits, social events, weekend rides, a training program, and support during the collegiate road-racing season.

If you are interested in checking out the club–and possibly becoming a member–we have our first meet-the-team ride on Saturday, September 26th at 10am at the north end of the HUB. We will have teams rides every following Saturday and Sunday (including the 27th of September) at the same time and place. You can also drop by our table at the SAO Activities Fair on September 30th on the HUB lawn. We will also have an introductory meeting in early October; time and location will be announced via the email list and website.

Mountain Bike Team

We have been looking into creating an official MTB branch of Husky Cycling and have created a quick Catalyst survey to get an idea of interest in riding or racing MTB.

Even if you are not interested in any off-road riding, please take the survey so that we can get an idea of interested vs. not-interested. There are only a few quick questions to answer.
