The Husky Cycling Club ended one of their most successful seasons on record, capping off with an overall team victory in the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference. The final weekend of racing was hosted by Washington State University and University of Idaho cycling clubs. WSU hosted the road race Saturday morning in Palouse, Washington. Idaho hosted the team time trial Saturday afternoon in Genesee, Idaho and then the final criterium on their campus in Moscow, Idaho on Sunday morning.

The Huskies only nabbed one individual win with Michael Kim in the Men’s D criterium and UW cranked out Team Time Trial wins in the Men’s A, B and D fields.

Despite crashing in the final lap of the criterium, Grant Boursaw won the Men’s A overall with an insurmountable lead. But the biggest prize off all was the Huskies winning the conference title by a thousand point margin.

In contrast to the spring road racing season, a few Dawgs have ventured off-road to the local mountain bike racing circuit. Pete Hall and Ariel Wetzel have been racing all spring on the dirt and have landed on a few podiums. New this year, the Husky MTB program is getting off the ground and the full collegiate MTB will take place in the fall, culminating with Nationals in Lake Tahoe, California.

Pete Hall has progressed throughout the season, earning his expert class upgrade and finished the BUDU series 5th overall, with a bronze standard finish on the final race day.

Ariel Wetzel represented the women’s team in the beginner group and ended up 2nd overall in the series overall.

Stay tuned as we will give more updates on all fronts of the Husky Cycling team as school winds down and the summer racing seasons heat up. As always, you can ride in the follow car by following us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/huskycycling or clicking the Twitter link on the left side of this page.

The Husky Cycling team travelled to Montana for the omnium this past weekend hosted by the Montana State University and University of Montana cycling clubs.

Saturday morning’s road race was a grueling 33 mile loop west of the town of Bozeman, that finished atop the Lewis and Clark Caverns. The final climb presented a 5 kilometer, 1100 foot gain to the highest point on the course at 5,300 feet. Rad Cunningham won the Men’s A race with a solo breakaway that started from mile 2 and ending up finishing with a gap of over 5 minutes on the field, while Ryan Larson won the Men’s B race after being led off course by the lead car and forced to chase back for most of the race.

The team time trial was held in the small town of Whitehall and was a 16 mile, out and back on a scenic valley highway overlooked by the Tobacco Root Mountains. The Huskies took commanding wins in the Men’s B and Women’s C fields.

Sunday, the Dawgs travelled to Missoula for the University of Montana Circuit Race. The 1.8 mile circuit featured a long climb and a fast descent that favored a rider with strong climbing and descending abilities. Davis Shepherd won the Men’s A field and Ryan Larson completed his perfect weekend with a win in the Men’s B field.

Next week, the Dawg Pack travels to Pullman, Washington and Moscow, Idaho for the northwest collegiate cycling conference championships hosted by the Washington State University and University of Idaho cycling clubs, April 24-25. Don’t forget you can follow the Dawgs every turn on Twitter, at www.twitter.com/HuskyCycling or clicking the twitter link on this left side of this page. Stay tuned!

This past weekend the Huskies traveled to Walla Walla, Washington for the latest stop on the NWCCC spring racing season hosted by the Missionaries from Whitman College. Saturday featured a morning road race and an afternoon team time trial, while Sunday offered a spectator-friendly circuit race.

The road course was a 15 mile loop out in the lush farmland north of Walla Walla and was scoured by heavy crosswinds for all races on course. Michael Kim netted the only win on the day in the Men’s D race, but the full results show that Huskies scored top fives in almost every category.

The afternoon team time trial was an out-and-back, 10 mile course that ran on a section of the morning’s road race course. The Dawgs scored victories in the Men’s A and B fields.

Sunday’s schedule deterred from the usual criterium and was replaced by a 3 mile circuit that featured a daunting 300 meter, 15% grade climb with the finish line at the top. Dawgs took wins with Devon Simpson in the Women B’s and Paul Young in the Men B’s.

Next week, the Dawg Pack travels to Bozeman and Missoula, Montana for the next omnium hosted by the University of Montana and Montana State University cycling clubs April 17-18. Don’t forget you can follow the Dawgs every turn on Twitter, at www.twitter.com/HuskyCycling or clicking the twitter link on this left side of this page. Stay tuned!

This past weekend, the Husky Cycling team traveled to Salem and Portland, Oregon for the latest round of the NW Collegiate Cycling Tour. The weekend’s format was switched up a bit, with the criterium on saturday morning, team time trial on saturday afternoon and the road race on sunday.

Willamette University hosted the criterium that looped around the capitol building in Salem. Marc Schwartz notched the only Husky win on the day with a daring solo move with four laps to go in the Men’s A race.

The afternoon time trial was held outside of Salem on scenic farm roads and held a deceiving climb for the riders halfway through the course. Washington took wins in the Men’s A and B and Women’s C fields. Both Saturday races were plagued with extreme weather conditions.

Sunday’s road race was hosted by Portland State University on a scenic circuit on the roads around Hagg Lake outside of Forest Grove, Oregon. Grant Boursaw won the Men’s A race and Jesse Opp won the Women’s B race.

After the fourth weekend of racing, the Huskies have taken control over the overall points standings by a margin of 370 points over Whitman College.

Next week, the Dawg Pack travels to Walla Walla, Washington for the Whitman College Omnium, April 10-11. Don’t forget you can follow the Dawgs every turn on Twitter, at www.twitter.com/HuskyCycling or clicking the twitter link on this left side of this page. Stay tuned!

This past weekend, the Huskies traveled up to Bellingham for a road race and time trial hosted by the Western Washington University Vikings, and then returned home to Seward Park to host their own criterium.

The weekend highlights began with road race wins: Grant Boursaw in the Men’s A, Evan Schmitt in the Men’s B, Ryan Larson in the Men’s C and Lisa Toner in the Women’s B.

Saturday afternoon’s team time trial was run on a 10 mile, out and back course on Mosquito Lake road. The Dawgs took victories in the Men’s A and B fields over their newfound rivals from Whitman College.

The Husky Criterium on Sunday was greeted with rain early in the morning, but ceased before racing started at 8 am. Amplified music and play-by-play announcing kept the spectators fired up along with the racers as they rocketed around the 1 kilometer course in Seward Park, along the shores of Lake Washington.

The "Husky Hit Squad" awaits the road race start. Photo by Katie Houck.

Devon Simpson cranked out the only Husky victory on the day in the Women’s B field, but second place finishes by Grant Boursaw in the Men’s A and Anthony Azevedo in the Men’s B fields kept the points totals high in the overall team omnium.

This past weekend, the Husky Cycling Team traveled to Oregon for the Oregon/Oregon State omnium. Saturday presented the road race in the morning and a team time trial in the afternoon hosted by the University of Oregon Ducks. Rad Cunningham pulled off a solo breakaway to win the Men’s A race. Lisa Toner and Jesse Opp created a separation from the field to go 1-2 in the Women’s B field. Anthony Azevedo survived the winning break on the day to finish 2nd in the Men’s B race. Ryan Larson rounded out the strong day for the dawgs by winning the Men’s C field.

The Huskies brought the heat to the afternoon team time trials, taking dominant victories in the Men’s A, B and Women’s B fields.

Sunday’s criterium course circumnavigated Reser Stadium on the Oregon State University campus and was plagued by constantly changing weather conditions. Grant Boursaw completed the Men’s A sweep in style with a big sprint in the finale. Anthony Azevedo notched UW’s second victory on the day with his mad dash to the line in the Men’s B field.

The Dawgs travel to Bellingham next saturday for the road race and team time trial, and then return to home turf for their criterium at Seward Park.
