Mayor Mike McGinn Visits Husky Cycling

On Saturday October 15th, Mayor of Seattle Mike McGinn joined us at our weekly Saturday morning ride. Before we got rolling, the club took the opportunity to publicly thank Mayor McGinn for his work on making Seattle safe and accessible for cyclists. In reply, the Mayor said a few words to the over 50 Husky Cycling Club members in attendance in recognition of the club and the great importance of cycling in Seattle. Check out some media coverage of the event, as well as full video of Mayor McGinn's presentation, below!

Thanks to KHouck photography for the photos!

UW Victorious at Collegiate Track Nationals

2011 Collegiate Track Nationals were held in Indianapolis from September 15th -17th. Davis Shepherd, Grant Boursaw, and Kelly Plese of the Husky Cycling team competed against other colleges from all over the country. There were four individual races including the 1K/500m time trial, pursuit, match sprints, and points race. A racer’s best three of these four races were counted towards the overall omnium standings. Grant Boursaw placed 2nd in the 1K, 3rd in the match sprints, 6thin the points race, and 1st place in the individual omnium. Davis Shepherd placed 3rd in the points race and 15th in the 4K. Kelly Plese placed 4th in the pursuit, 8th in the points race, 15th in the 500m time trial and 7th in the individual omnium. As a team, Husky Cycling placed 8th in the overall team omnium.

Due to windy conditions the time trial times of many riders were slower than expected, however the placement among the competition was not lacking. Kelly received a 4th place in her 3k pursuit and 15th in the 500m time trial, Davis received 15th in his 4k pursuit, and Grant received 2nd place in his 1k time trial.

To qualify for the sprint bracket Grant raced a flying 200m and qualified 1st with a time of 11.4 sec. After numerous rounds of 2-up match sprinting (2 lap race involving just 2 racers) Grant eventually found himself racing in the best of three bronze medal match. Grant lost the first sprint however he fought back to win the bronze by taking the second and third sprint.

Kelly Plese’s Points race final was 60 laps (10 sprints every 6 laps). Kelly bridged up to numerous breakaways and was able to accumulate points for her hard work. Unlike the men’s race there was never a break that lapped the field but instead a flurry of smaller breaks occurred throughout the race. Kelly would receive 8th place for her hard work in the points race and also 7th place in the Women’s Individual Omnium.

Davis Shepherd and Grant Boursaw both qualified for the Men’s Points Race Final (15 sprints every 6 laps) by finishing in the top 15 in their respective points race heats. In the final, Davis was part of a seven man break away that would eventually lap the field. Davis managed to get 9 points while in the breakaway so by lapping the field he totaled 29 points (a rider receives 20 points for lapping). After the pack was back together Grant placed highly in 6 sprints to eventually amass 25 points. Davis would get 3rd place while Grant settled for 6th. With this result Grant would win gold in the Men’s Individual Omnium.

Overall every Husky racer that went to Indy earned a medal. Amazingly UW finished 8th overall while only sending 3 racers (many other teams had upwards of 10 riders).
